Hash Generator
About this tool
SHA-1/256/384/512 are computed with the browser's WebCrypto (crypto.subtle.digest); MD5, which WebCrypto lacks, is implemented following RFC 1321. Text is hashed as UTF-8 bytes, so the SHA-256 of "abc" is ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad.
Choosing a file hashes its entire contents — useful for checking a download against the publisher's SHA-256 checksum. The file is only read on this device, never uploaded.
MD5 and SHA-1 have known collision attacks and should not be used for security. A single hash is also not enough for storing passwords; use bcrypt or Argon2.
FAQ
Is my file uploaded?
No. The browser reads it and computes the hash on this device.
Why does the same text give a different hash?
Even one extra space or newline changes the hash completely; check for a trailing newline.
Can a hash be reversed?
No. Hashing is one-way.
